I loved this - thank you. I’m going away for three weeks tomorrow and you’ve inspired me to try a daily haiku over that time. I’ve only written them very intermittently but even so I’ve noticed, like you, how clearly they summon memories, so this feels like the ideal time to try.
I walked the Kumano Kodo in March and every time I used the stamp, marking spots along the way, I also stopped, observed and wrote a haiku (of sorts). It was a lovely ritual that seemed to tie me into that place and moment of life.
How beautiful Sally. A fitting addition to the small beautiful bird that met the second story window of my neighbor's condo. during the most glorious blooms of spring. That juxtaposition of death during the season of burgeoning life just touched my heart.
Me too Deborah, so sad that our windows can kill birds in this way. Feels something to have at least cared and witnessed through your actions and our words
Thank you Sally for this invitation. I loved reading about attentiveness and how you have embraced Haiku in your writing practice. I am inspired. And I think it might be a great way for me to get into my writing head, take a moment to pay attentive to three real things around me. 🙏
This is wonderful both the essay and the comments. I’ve never written poetry of any kind much less haiku. Always to afraid of getting it wrong, the syllables and such. Maybe I just have too many words. I shall try. Anything to help me notice
Thank you Kate !Do leap in, I don't count syllables or follow the rules. I simply enjoy noting the words that bubble up in response to what I see, hear and feel, then playing with them, editing down to their essence.

Five, seven, five syllables.
Witness essence three.

Lovely Sally, fresh like a zinging breeze.
Bed with hot water bottle. Gorgeous cover. Cat and toast.
Oh this does sound cosy! X
What an inspiring piece. Here's my Haiku inspired by you:
return home after
leaving for an imagined
future. No jet lag!
Oh love this Juliet! what a theme for haikus - your best imagined future!
The hum of the fan
Fills my ears
Outside, heavy wet rain
Missing home
I call — but
No one hears
How to begin?
Take a pen
Write the first real thing

Thank you Kate, your haikus are so alive and evocative. Three real things, yes! I am inspired by you.
